Ian Beattie: Playing sadistic character was horrifying

One of the most famos HBO TV series „Game of Thrones“ role for the actor Ian Beattie was not the most comfortable one. He was reprising the role of Lord Meryn Trant and was extremely happy to be a part of this show, however, being a sadistic persona was not very pleasent.

The actor from Northern Ireland palyde Lord Meryn Trant from the first to fifth season and in the show he was a knight of kings guard, protecting royal Lannisters‘ family. Finally, as most of the characters in the show, he was murdered. His death is still the most expensive and one of the most brutal one in the show. At the end of season five, by a long torture he was murdered by Arya Stark, played by Maisie Williams.

The shocking murder scene had a huge impact on actor himself. „I knew that Meryn will finally die. Producers called me and said – Meryn, your time has come. They said, that I will have to act terrible before the death but the death itself will be unforgettable“, – said Ian Beattie in one of the events that took place in London. „I was hoping that someone popular will kill me. I thought, maybe Bran or someone else. But when I got the script and started reading it, my first thought was „Oh God, oh no!“. It was horrible“.

The father of three told that this kind of act against children is not something he would understand. „If someone would touch my kids like that, believe me, his death would be way longer than Meryn‘s. Those scenes were terrible. It was the biggest challenge in my career“, – told the actor.

For the last two days of filming, actor spent almost 8 hours being totally blind. His face was covered in special make-up that was shown in the epizode, and for all that time he could not see a thing. „While I was blind, I could feel the character better and show his vulnerability at that particular moment. I have never been so sad while I was filming in my entire life. There were moments when I would just go to the bathroom and burs tinto tears. It is horrifying to play a man who would enjoy these horrible things“, – Ian Beatties shared his experiences from the last shootings.

More about filming in the show and other projects Ian Beattie will tell during „Comic Con Baltics“ on 2-3 December in Vilnius, Lithuania, exhibition centre LITEXPO. Don‘t miss your chance to get the cheapest tickets before 5th October. Tickets can be found in www.tiketa.lt.
