Howard Hamlin – A Character Whose Story Proved More Complex Than It First Appeared

“Better Call Saul” follows lawyer Jimmy McGill’s transformation into Saul Goodman, whom viewers first met in the series “Breaking Bad.” Across the show’s six seasons, Fabian portrays Howard Hamlin, one of the partners at the law firm Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill.

At first, Howard appears to be an obstacle standing in the way of Jimmy’s professional ambitions. However, as the series unfolds, it becomes clear that their conflict is far more complicated than it initially seems. Howard’s relationships with his colleagues, professional reputation, and personal struggles reveal another side of his character. As viewers gradually learn more about the circumstances behind his decisions, their perception of him begins to change.

One of the most interesting aspects of Fabian’s experience on the show was that he did not know from the outset how his character’s story would unfold. In interviews, he has explained that he received the scripts in installments and could not predict the full course of Howard’s storyline. This meant approaching each new script based on what he knew at the time, while later plot twists could change the meaning of events that had come before.

Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, “Better Call Saul” aired from 2015 to 2022. The series received widespread critical acclaim, earned multiple Emmy Award nominations, and won a Peabody Award. Howard Hamlin became Fabian’s most significant television role, bringing his work to an even wider international audience.

From Horror Films to Animation and Industry Advocacy

Although Patrick Fabian is best known to audiences for playing Howard Hamlin in “Better Call Saul,” his career spans more than three decades across film, television, and animation. One of his most notable film roles was Reverend Cotton Marcus in the 2010 horror film “The Last Exorcism.” For this performance, Fabian won the Best Actor award at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival.

Fabian has also worked in animation, voicing Hank Henshaw in the DC animated films “The Death of Superman” and “Reign of the Supermen,” as well as Harvey Dent in “Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham.”

Beyond acting, Fabian has contributed to the work of his professional community. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, the American labor union representing performers and other media professionals, and has served on both its national board and its Los Angeles local board. The organization represents actors, voice performers, and other entertainment industry professionals, advocates for their interests, and negotiates working conditions on their behalf.
